History

Superior Charter Township, MI is a civil township located in Chippewa County, Michigan. It was first settled by Europeans in 1825 and platted by A. B. Rowe the following year. The name was recorded in 1828 when the area was part of Wayne County before Washtenaw County’s formation in 1829. Superior achieved Charter Township status in 1979 and joined Chippewa County when it was created from Crawford County in 1845.

The history of Superior Charter Township’s settlement and incorporation is unique for its length and continuity between counties. This rich history is perhaps still visible today through the culture, environment, and infrastructure that remain around the area to this day.

The majority of the township is covered by Ypsilanti Community Schools; additionally, Willow Run Community Schools were incorporated into Ypsilanti Community Schools in 2013 due to its proximity within the township.
