How to Get Rid of Rosacea - Rosacea Treatments in Ann Arbor
Can you get rid of rosacea? This guide explains rosacea treatments and your options.

If you’re like many people, you want to know how to get rid of rosacea – a condition marked by redness, flushing and acne-type breakouts. Fortunately, there are rosacea treatments available. This guide explains your options.

How to Get Rid of Rosacea: Laser Treatments

Rosacea affects about 14 million Americans – it’s far more common than you may think. Though it’s more common in women than it is in men, it can manifest very severely in men; that means it doesn’t matter who you are, rosacea can affect you and the way you feel about your appearance.

If you leave rosacea untreated, it can get worse over time. It then becomes more difficult to manage. Though doctors and scientists don’t know exactly what causes rosacea, and although it’s difficult to treat, we can still improve it and keep it under control by using laser treatments.

What You Need to Know About Laser Treatments for Rosacea

Using special lasers over a series of three to six treatments, your doctor can help minimize the effects rosacea has on your skin. The laser treatments – each of which last between 30 and 45 minutes – can seal the layers of tiny blood vessels that cause redness and flushing problems.

Is There Downtime After Rosacea Treatments?

There’s no downtime after a rosacea treatment with a laser. However, your skin might be a little red after treatment, and your skin may swell a little bit. The redness should go away after several hours, and any swelling should diminish within a few days.

What Scientists Think About Rosacea

Scientists don’t know exactly what causes rosacea; if they did, we could work to eradicate it. Because they’re not sure of the exact cause, we can only treat it and improve its symptoms. Many scientists believe that rosacea comes from a combination of factors, and that those factors may include overactive immune systems, genetic traits or even environmental factors (such as a reaction to contaminants in the air). You may have flare-ups of rosacea if you have a hot drink or eat spicy foods, or it may flare up on its own without any help from you. The bottom line is that scientists are working hard to determine what causes rosacea, and until they figure it out, we can treat it.

Are There Other Treatments for Rosacea?

You and your doctor should sit down and talk about rosacea if it’s affecting your life and the way you feel about your appearance. There may be other things you can do to help prevent rosacea from flaring up, and there are certainly things you can do to keep your skin healthy. You may also benefit from acne scarring treatments that help minimize the appearance of acne scars, which can look darker and deeper when rosacea flares up.

Your doctor may even suggest dietary changes, as there is some evidence that a healthy diet can help minimize rosacea flare-ups. Some people swear by a low-carbohydrate diet because of the anti-inflammatory effects, as well. However, you shouldn’t make any dietary changes or try any over-the-counter treatments without talking to your doctor first.

It’s very important that you know you can’t get rid of rosacea. It’s a skin condition that we can only treat – but we do have very advanced tools and treatment methods for rosacea.
