If you’re like many people considering lip fillers for more volume, this guide will help you make the right choice – and it explains what they are, how they work and what type of results you can expect after treatment. As one of Ann Arbor’s favorite lip filler clinics, CosMedic LaserMD has you covered.
What Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are injectable treatments that add volume to your lips. Thousands of people get lip fillers across the United States every day – and these temporary treatments can provide you with exactly the look you want.
Lip fillers are an immediate solution. They don’t require surgery or any complicated medical procedures, and in addition to plumping your lips, they can smooth out wrinkles around your mouth and improve your lips’ shape and definition.
Fillers are different from lip implants; implants are a more permanent solution, and they’re a lot like breast implants. If you get lip implants, you’ll need to go to a cosmetic surgeon. Your surgeon will make incisions and insert silicone strips in one or both of your lips; the incisions will need stitches and follow-up care.
Types of Lip Fillers
There are several types of lip fillers on the market, and today, some of the most popular are made with hyaluronic acid. Some are also made with collagen. Common lip filler brand names that may sound familiar to you include Juvederm, Restylane, Artecoll and Teosyal, though there are many others.
How Does a Doctor Inject Lip Fillers?
Before your doctor considers injecting your lips, you’ll sit through a consultation to explain the look you want. That way, your doctor can make the right recommendations and determine what’s best for your lips’ shape and size (including how much filler to use). Your doctor will let you know what she recommends based on what you want and what’s available.
When it’s time for the actual procedure, your doctor may apply a topical numbing cream to your lips. Lip fillers aren’t extremely painful, but a topical numbing cream can help reduce any discomfort you may feel during the injections. Your doctor will sculpt your fillers into the right shape and size before you leave her chair.
Your lips will most likely swell a bit after your injections, but don’t worry – that’s totally normal. It’s also normal to experience some bruising in the area around the injections. Swelling and bruising should go away within just a few days.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?
Lip fillers can last for up to 18 months, but how long they last depends on several factors – including how quickly your body absorbs the injections. That means your lip fillers may last anywhere from 6 months to 18 months.
Are Lip Fillers Bad for You?
Lip fillers are generally recognized as safe. In fact, one of the most common types of fillers – collagen – is something your own body produces. If you’re not sure whether lip fillers are bad for you personally, or if there’s a better alternative, you should talk to your doctor. She’ll talk to you about the risks versus the potential benefits of lip fillers so you can make an informed decision.
Are Lip Fillers Painful?
It’s normal to have some bruising and tenderness immediately following a lip filling procedure. However, those symptoms should go away after a few days. You shouldn’t feel any pain after that – your lips should feel normal (though plumper than they used to).
Do Your Lips Go Back to Normal After Lip Fillers?
As your body absorbs the filler, your lips will go back to their original shape and size. You can get follow up treatments with your doctor if you want to refresh your look.
