Melasma Treatments
Facial Treatment
Melasma is a common skin problem. Melasma is particularly likely to affect women who become pregnant or who take oral contraceptives or postmenopausal hormone therapy but may be caused by any hormonal imbalance. Women are far more likely than men to get melasma. It is so common during pregnancy that melasma is sometimes called “the mask of pregnancy.” It causes brown to gray-brown patches, usually on the face. Most people get it on their cheeks, bridge of their nose, forehead, chin, and above their upper lip. It also can appear on other parts of the body that get lots of sun, such as the forearms and neck.
Treatment Options For Melasma
At-home skin care regimen: Proper Skin Care is the main modality of treatment of melasma including proper sunscreen and sun protection. Often these alone cannot give you the protection you need. Other important options include physician-prescribed topical bleaching agents such as Hydroquinone, and Retinoids to assist turnover, but also Cysteamine HCl, a novel intensive pigment corrector.
Chemical peels: A variety of peels are used for age spots, poikiloderma, melasma and other skin conditions that primarily affect the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin.
HydraFacial: This treatment rejuvenates your skin cells, improving their texture and elasticity, diminishing fine lines and lightening areas of darker pigmentation. It can also help enhance the penetration powers of chemical peels.
ICON laser therapy: A melanin–specific laser system, the ICON 1540 XD/XF laser is used to lighten or erase a variety of pigmented lesions. These lasers target and “shatter” the lesion’s pigment into smaller molecules that are then absorbed and removed by the body. Several treatments may be needed to remove a lesion, particularly darker–hued ones. Fractional laser skin resurfacing with the ICON 1540 XD/XF can provide a good resolution of melasma for those with persistent pigmentation. The treatment protocol is very specific with our laser and the specific handpiece. The ICON 1540 XD/XF provides a more controlled form of micro-damage than other lasers, causing less damage to the surrounding tissues, and therefore less redness, and shorter healing times than other lasers. Treatment of melasma may require several laser sessions, spaced at 6-8 week intervals, to see best results.*
PicoLaser is an innovative and highly effective treatment option for melasma, offering a safe and non-invasive solution to this common skin concern. Utilizing ultra-short picosecond laser pulses, PicoLaser technology targets the melanin responsible for melasma’s pigmentation, breaking it down into smaller particles that are naturally eliminated by the body. This advanced treatment not only reduces the appearance of melasma but also promotes skin rejuvenation, resulting in a more even and radiant complexion.
