A skin tag is a small piece of soft, hanging skin that may have a peduncle, also known as stalk. Skin tags can appear anywhere on the body, but especially where skin rubs against other skin or clothing. Other names for skin tags include acrochordon, cutaneous papilloma, cutaneous tag, fibroepithelial polyp, fibroma molluscum, fibroma pendulum, soft fibroma, and Templeton skin tags. Skin tags are very common, affecting men and women equally, and generally occur after midlife.
What Are Moles?
Moles are generally harmless skin growths that may be flat or raised. They vary in color from pink flesh tones to tan or brown. Moles sometimes appear in “crops,” especially during adolescence. Moles can begin to grow in infancy and new ones can develop at any age. A growing or changing mole, especially in an adult, should be checked by a physician to monitor its potential for skin cancer.
What Are Warts?
Warts are benign (not cancerous) skin growths that appear when a virus infects the top layer of the skin. Viruses that cause warts are called human papillomavirus (HPV). You are more likely to get one of these viruses if you cut or damage your skin in some way. Wart viruses are contagious and can spread by contact with the wart or something that touched the wart. Warts are often skin-colored and feel rough, but they can be dark, flat, and smooth.
