What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
PRP, Platelet-rich Plasma, is a biologic isolated from a patient’s whole blood. The concept behind the clinical use of PRP is to harness the natural biological components of a patient’s blood―primarily platelets that are rich in various growth factors, which optimizes the conditions for healing, improve inflammatory response, control infection and promote angiogenesis. Platelets facilitate healing and revival of existing collagen and promote new collagen through the release of many growth factors actively involved in this process.
How Does Prp Work?
A small vial of blood is taken from your arm – less than that normally taken for routine blood tests. The blood is then placed in a vial and spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells and plasma. The process concentrates the platelet count to about 7X normal. It is this platelet-rich plasma – often called “liquid gold” – that is then activated and injected into the skin, microneedled into the skin or applied topically to enhance surface regeneration action.
